MaCCNO Core Values
Non-Carceral
The Criminal Justice system should not be involved in the regulation of cultural activity.
Committed to Equity
Both internally and externally, we examine our organization and our work to ensure we are actively working to equitable outcomes, which includes using our access to both disrupt inequitable systems and increase access for those that may not have it.
Anti-Racist
Many of the laws, systems, and policies that govern cultural practice were created under white supremacist power structures (including post-Reconstruction and Jim Crow) and must be dismantled, replaced, and rewritten to rectify and compensate for historical injustice.
Community Driven
Community needs, ideas, and desires provide the core of all of our activities. We work to build the civic capacity of the community so they can ultimately advocate for themselves, and no one will be included in our advocacy without consent.
Accurate
We strive to ensure all information we present is fair, factual, fully researched, and widely accessible.
Intersectional
Issues that affect the cultural community are widespread and multi-faceted—far more than one organization can address alone. We will continue to partner with organizations and institutions that work on issues such as housing, transportation, and criminal justice reform.
Transparent
We are open about our initiatives and represent them fully and fairly. We believe that advocacy should take place in the public sphere whenever possible, not behind closed doors.
MaCCNO Mission Statement
We collaborate with, organize, and build the civic capacity of the New Orleans music and cultural community to preserve and nurture the city’s culture, to translate community vision into policy change, and to create a more just and equitable city and region.
